Week 6 (October 19 + 23)

OMG look at us being content creators!

As we continue to create our content, what are strategies that can use to build worlds? To make those worlds more accessible? More equitable?
Does Second Life succeed at this? How does is or doesn't it?
In the worlds that you are building, how can you apply the lessons that you are learning by reflecting on SecondLife?

  1. PointgodGaming(Sharieff): I actually am not totally sure as to what strategies i would use to build a world...mmh I have to see some more examples of this to answer that.I'm sorry... well second life does succeed in making the world more accessible because they make it easy to join and operate things.... I really don't have an idea as to how exactly apply these lessons.. But I guess I would apply these lessons to my world by just learning from them and try to avoid certain things I dislike about the experience and changing that in my world

  2. Second life has the freedom to build worlds beyond belief that you wouldn't in real life. If you day dreamed of being in an island of bunch of cute cats, Second Life seems like the most virtual (realistic) way to express those emotions.

Second life does succeed in it as their are worlds beyond belief that are open to explore like any other.
Im not really interested in building a virtual world in second life and Im just exploring, but in real life basis, I would one day like to learn the tools to create my own VR experience and show them to the world of my vision.

  3. Kat [Katzlevania]: I do love how creative the worlds are in Second Life. I may not like the people that I met so far in Second Life but i do enjoy the thought and planning people put into building these worlds. It's actually amazing when you think about it. I think my favorite type of world I went to was one that looked like the part of Boston where Edgar Allan Poe was buried but it was has fantasy element with a creepy elements from his stories and poems. I love Poe, so this was up my ally. I guess the lesson I take away from Second Life is to build a world that you actually have an interest in and can honestly put your whole heart into.

  4. The worlds in second life are crazy imaginative so I think they do a great job at that but in terms of creating my own world I really don't have many ideas now.

  5. i do not know what kinda strategies i can use for build my own world and also i do not have any idea about it . i think the second life is amazing. in the game people can do thing that can not do in the real life such as people can fly and walking under ocean ect.

  6. well for starters if you were to choose a piece of land to purchase in second life i would chose a piece that may match what I'm trying to do with my VR experience, i have been to many worlds in second life and every single one of them looks different or slightly similar but never the same. Second Life does succeed in being able to make places where everyone is equal, accessible because anyone can be themselves in this game. Well for our VR project some things that i find similar to Second Life is building worlds for a specific audience, like in Second Life we also have a set of rules that we must follow like in the Project we have now. In second life you learn by going to worlds with rules to respect the rules and it's very similar to real life.

  7. I think that going online and buying a place of your liking is a good idea. As well as trying to buy a theme that you want to be in and build your own personal world. I feel that if I were to buy part of a property I do my best to customize it o make it feel like its meant for me. So other people would feel comfortable on visiting. Even give you the sense that makes it feel like its connected to the real Reality that we live in. To make those worlds so accessible we need to be full of creativity and endless imagination in order to make it feel like a real world and makes users want to comeback a relive the area again. Second life also is not just an average game, but tries to make places so that way it can form a real community inside and out. So that way it would treat other people fairly and try to make other users happy and not make them feel so negative whenever they want to play the game. As well as making the rules fair for everyone to get along without any trouble. I definitely feel like 2nd life connects with other people and helps them get along with people as well as providing the best service as possible. It also helps protect users that feels scared or afraid of what other users would deal with the individual and they make sure that they get rid of those who would cause certain amount of trouble when playing this game. I can apply lessons by being friendly, kind, and respectable to other users online. Also making sure not to get involved with the bad ones. I its really indescribable this experience especially when making your own dream kingdom.

  8. I feel like if we really need to build a world, it should be much more meaning for "others" not for "ourselves", but Second Life for me is opposite. Also, people tend to have a goal so that they can keep working on. For example, a player wants to reach 100 levels so he/she keeps killing monsters to gain experience. In SecondLife, I don't know where is my goal and what can I get from my work. There are people in the world who like to talk and people who don’t like. I don't think it's a major element that a game world should have and interactive is not necessarily equal to communication.

  9. The strategies that we can use to build worlds is to create a world that is more colorful and a world of what a person wants to choose for their world. Would be better if the game was a bit more easier to understand and probably have mini games to play with different avatars . Second life needs to create more worlds that are a comfort for someone that could be interested in a place of their imagination. It would be more fun if the game was more understanding to make it more entertaining. I don't remember if Second Life has games that you can play instead of exploring around the whole time, but I can't tell. It would be fun if there are games to play at Second life. It's to understand the person that is playing the game and see if they are comfortable from their perspective in how they want the game to be.

  10. One example that can help construct virtual worlds in Second Life is by building meshes in order to create buildings and landscapes. I've watched a few tutorials on how to build homes in Second Life, and it seems as if users are able to use a particular interface in order to construct these three dimensional models. Another example that could help construct virtual worlds is by purchasing land. By purchasing land, users are able to do whatever they'd please; in this case, you are able to plot down your creations or buildings. Second Life could become more equitable by considering what may become ideal to all players.

Although I'd like to think that Second Life may succeed in being fair to all players, I don't think that this is the case. One reason why I think that Second Life is not accessible to all is because of its online currency. Yes, there are freebies in the game, however, the majority of items that are listed in Second Life will cost "Linden Dollars". In order to get the in-game currency, players will need to spend real life money.

I can apply what I have learned from Second Life towards this class/real life; constructing 3D models may be similar to what the class may be building in software like Unity and Blender. Second Life gives me a taste of what its like to make meshes and polish them up.

  11. Wilson (DominicanAvatar1996) - I think I would try to make then as clear as possible for others. I'm not sure how to related to second life.

Personally i would try to make worlds that will fit everyone where everyone is welcome. I know in second life that certain worlds welcome certain people and have their own set of rules. But also I would try to make a world that I love with my interests as well so many people who like the same things I do can come and enjoy. I can apply second life to what we learned in class by seeing I'm making worlds in class with the VR experience which is similar to second life though it may not be VR... it's still a new world and experience.

  13. (Mr.SimplyAmazing) Some strategies we an use to build worlds Is some implements from other successful virtual worlds. To make those worlds more accessible you have to make the world less complex and easy to maneuver in. Second life does succeed at this because they have many variety of worlds that you can explore and see what best fits you.

Second Life is not a game I would
reference when looking for inspiration when developing any sort of content, first and foremost however, optimization is key.

Second Life released in 2003 and runs terribly on computers that run current generation games at over 144fps.

Speaking from experience, lag doesn't always come from poor hardware and this lag (the poorly optimized game lag) is one of the main contributors for the lack of immersion in video games. You cannot get immersed in a game if you are constantly stuttering. Second Life fails in this area. My CPU and GPU usage stay near 10-15% yet the game lags and becomes a chore to play.

If there's a lesson I have learned from playing Second Life it is to focus on not only adding more content but also making sure it is optimized and runs well on as many hardware setups as possible, a good example being the very popular Fortnite. It runs well from Mobile devices to High End PCs.

I don't know what methods to build worlds but I know second life does a good job at it. Each world second life has shows a different environment (maybe have a vibe to it) in my opinion. It good so each world doesn't look and/or feel the same place.

  17. One way to build a virtual world in Second Life is by building meshes in order to create buildings and landscapes or by even buying lands. I have earned a couple of landscapes for free and I was able to plot down my buildings. I think Second Life is not very accessible in terms of creating landscapes or buildings to everyone because it requires you to use their online currency ("Linden Dollars") and in order to get the currency, players must spend real life currencies.

  18. We can make a world thats easy to maneuver in, that is welcoming to everyone.. I'm still not use to the quality of the game but I've been to few worlds that i notice are empty. mostly all of the party and beach worlds are packed so we can build something related to that. getting what you want off of second life is a little difficult because it seem like you have to buy everything ( obviously i did not find the free stuff yet) so they some succeed but then they don't because some people want goods w.o having to spend real american dollars..

  19. I think the worlds are very creative in Second Life. I just wish a lot of them weren't closed because I do enjoy looking at them. But the enjoyment only lives for a little while. I believe that the game quality of Second Life still hasn't been a comforting thing for me. It could be that the games I play has made me spoiled, but even though the worlds in Second Life are amazingly done I can't seem to shake the awkwardness of the visuals. I find a world that I think is beautiful but then I'm over it in the same minute.

  20. For World building it has to be immerse and stand out you could do that the design of the place and what features could you design to make it be unique from the rest.A good example of this is the Caledon oxford lecture hall which looks very elegant and prestigious
