Week 8 (November 1 + 6)

Hi all,

When you get a chance, insert week 8's post.

We are about to move into unity, what lessons have you learned from making your 360 video? What does SL offer that 360 video cannot do? What does 360 video do that SL cannot? How are they differently immersive?

  1. we can design our 3D models in Unity, anything we want we can do it from that, however, if we want to make more complex anime, we should learn programming language like C+

  2. Well the difference between SL and 360 video is basically that you can interact in SL but in 360 video it’s mostly watching someone else’s experience from their point of view. Both are immersive in unique ways, SL creates an illusion of someone you’re not and that could lead to addiction. While 360 video you could get immersed with someone else’s experience like actually feel something.

  3. Well in 360 you are experiencing everything at once in contrast with second life you are the creator of the experience and are in control of what kind of journey you would like to indulge in.

  4. I feel like 360 videos are more of an a personal experience, but SL and 360 videos are somewhat related because you are able to see everything minus the goggles, you are are able to experience a world without everything being right in front of you like the 360 videos

  5. I learned from my 360 video that no matter what, you need to put the viewer in the mind of what message you want to send. My video personally, I had a goal to make people feel overwhelmed and sick. Not a lot of people who hear a gunshot is going to act like something isn't the matter. It's a very traumatic experience for people who survive an experience with a weapon. So having that in mind, I tried my best to transfer all those emotions into my video.

  6. The lesson I learned from making 360 video's is how you can turn an average film into something you can interact with and have fun play. As well as having its surroundings around us every time we tend to rotate and move the video around. There will always be something there. SL offers more then 360 video because you are actually moving around place to place. As well as interacting with other users. 360 is mostly for users to been seen individually while 2nd life tends to revolve around a digital community where all individuals can actually see each other. 360 video is better because you get to see the best content you want to see rather then SL where some people are having to deal with users that are inappropriate. Both of them are differently immersive, because they both gives us an inside in different experiences in virtual reality. Where in 360 video you can always interact with many different users while in video the only way to interact with other users is by posting in comment section and wait for other users to respond. Where some doesn't respond at all for a long duration of time. Despite both having different experience its still the same category of virtual reality that we use in modern day. This is my description on how immersive 360 videos are compared to SL (second life).

From making 360 videos, I learned a few things. First, I learned that not every video is meant to be in VR/360. Some are just properly made for standard viewing, and that's okay. It reminds me how there was a 3D film craze a few years ago and it was overused by the film industry. Having a standard video gives the review the ability to step out from being "in" the video, and just enjoy from the outside. It's a different perceptive. Secondly, I learned that feedback from your peers is very important. They are able to give insight on their experience on their project and what they believe you as the artist is trying to convey in your piece. I like hearing the thoughts from others and see how I can improve or simply how they viewed my video.
SL offers users the feeling of a community. I feel like 360 videos/VR is lonesome. Only one actual person can be entertained at once, while in SL, you have the chance to involve your in a different world with hundreds of real people across the world. 360 video provides a realistic experience of the world around us or a more realistic feeling of an alternate universe besides our own. The graphics on SL isn't the best and I think 360 provides a better immersive experience. One is better visually, the other is better socially.

  8. Although the audience can decide the angle of view in the 360 movie, they only see what the producers decide to show them. And because the producer can't control the angle the viewer is watching, they are more likely to be distracted comparing to regular videos. On the other hand, everything in SL has no special purpose. What the players wants to see is determined by themselves. For me, 360 video is more like movie. If we miss any important information, we might not understand the message the producer really want to say. SL is more like parallel world. Even if the amount of information received by each person is different, the player is the most important core of the world.

  9. 360 video is show the information from subject way in 360 view. let audience to see what message you want to transmit. it is more realistic than regular videos. SL is like real world but people can interact with others from all over the world through computer. 360 video and SL are both immersive, but one is transmit and receive information, another is interact and experience.

  10. You can interact in SL but in 360 video it’s watching someone else’s experience from their perspective. In 360 video you could get immersed with someone else’s experience by feeling your in there or you're apart of the experience.

  11. Pointgodgaming(Sharieff): Throughout the course of us creating 360 vids i had learned that to make a 360 vid you have to go through countless trails and errors before you get it right. But, the thing second life offers that 360 vids can't is that second life you can change camera view to where you can see your charter without to much trouble.

  12. SL creates an illusion of a world you can manage and control and while 360 you can control your point of view. They are both different with the way we interact with the environment, 360 can be more visual while SL is more interactive.

  13. SL is a virtual world you can manipulate while VR is a virtual world as well but it already has it default. there are 2 different views when it comes to this. 360 vr lets you experience something like another country or activity such as hiking or skydiving. so with that you cant really interact with others like in SL

  14. After making my 360 video and trying it out on people, I learnt that my 360 video is not only limited to experiencing it through the head gear for the viewers to get an effective experience. It can also be experienced through a larger screen for a more effective immersive experience. The main difference between SL and 360 video is that although they're both interactive, SL gives more room for creating your own interactive experience by choosing what you'll love to see, feel and experience while 360 video it’s mostly watching someone else’s experience from their own perspective.

  15. Lessons learned from creating my 360 video made me more aware of exporting my settings and the importance of scale. Unlike 360, SL offers more social features like a chat/talk/buddy system. 360 video on the other hand, allows viewers to fully immerse themselves in a setting by using gear, however, you are unable to interact with other people.

  16. From making 360 videos I learned more about what makes a VR experience truly immersive, and the answer to that seemed to be a balance between comfort and visuals. If an experience is too difficult to take in, it becomes more of a chore than an experience. So making sure that your experience is enjoyable is very important to the process.

As for what Second Life offers that 360 video cannot offer would be the interactivity. Second Life allows, in most cases, some form of interaction between the user and the environment around them. While 360 video offers a more immersive experience if executed correctly. The user can feel as if they are in the video, but only as a spectator.

Making a 360 video was interesting, but what i notice is that to make the 360 video better is a 360 photo because a regular photo doesn't look good.
